And I'm Off

Departing Australia - 12th September 2014, leaving for the airport at the unearthly hour of 4:50am....
Tough gig for those who are headed off on an adventure! and what a wonderful adventure is it!

I left Tassie with Jade and Marriel, bound for Bali where we met the rest of our intrepid Wings to Work team. Amazingly I spotted the Western Australian contingent of our crew in a bar on the main drag of Legian as we were driving in from the airport. What are the chances of that??!! Sure made it easy for meeting up though!

That afternoon we met our team, relaxed a bit, changed some Aussie $$ into Indonesian rupiah and headed out for dinner with the group. I love this stage of the trip because so much adventure lies before you and while you don't know everyone on the team well, you know that by the time two weeks have passed you will be great friends. Oh the anticipation!

By about 9:00pm I was EXHAUSTED! Taking the time difference into account, I had already been up for 19 hours. I fell into bed at about 10:30pm and needless to say, I slept well.

The next morning we re-packed and jumped on the short flight from Denpasar to Kupang. We were greeted by Rev Ed and Femmy Dethan, their three children, Moses, Grace and Micah and Sam, their little foster boy who is two and seriously the cutest little boy in the whole wide world!!! Appropriately, one of our modes of transport was the truck, that we would become very used to over the coming fortnight. I love travelling the open air so I nabbed the opportunity to travel in a way that certainly wouldn't be legal in Australia :)

I'll leave you with  bunch of photos that will tell you the rest of the story!

Enjoy,
S xxxx

Just a few of the bags that the team were taking to Timor. Since we were all carrying donations, I think we came back with less than half of the gear we took. Great for our brothers and sisters in Christ who live in West Timor!

Felicity, Jess and Marriel pondering the experiences they would have in the two weeks following.

A team shot before leaving Bali. Lots of people asked us what Wings to Work was all about so it gave us a great chance to spread the news!

Kupang-bound!

The flight path from Denpasar to Kupang

1.75 hours before landing on Timor-soil! YAY!

Waiting for our bags in Kupang. Our fearless team leader making sure that nothing was left behind :)

First stop - lunch at KFC. Whaaaaat??? KFC in Timor? Since when did that happen? I was so disappointed to see the Western influences creeping in more and more.... Here Grace is teaching Jess and Felicity how to do the cup song. She's a whizz at it!

Micah and Moses riding with us in the truck

Brightly coloured bemos - with their music blaring of course!

Jade teaching Micah the Slap game. Not sure who won?!

The Elpida School - where we would do our work over the next few weeks. It sure changed by the time we were done there!

Some local children intrigued by so many 'bulle' (which people)

Martin up close to one of the pigs at the back of the New Hope home, just one of the small parts of the self-sufficient 'farm' that is being created there. Pastor Ed sure is an ideas man!! The children fatten up these pigs to eat or sell. Their manure is used to make eco-gas to operate the kitchen. It's an incredible system.  Nothing is wasted here!

Some of the chooks - again, these are part of the farm. Used for breeding and then to eat or gather eggs from. If there is an over-supply of chooks, they are sold.

Pastor Ed, with a dream to conquer the world (one project at a time :))

The gas system - ingenious!

The fish farm. The fish are moved from pond to pond as they grow. The fish are bred, fattened up and then eaten or sold.

One of the many vegetable gardens here. The children gather all of their nightly vegetables from here. If the crop is very large, the veges are sold. Takes a bit for that to happen though because there are a lot of children to feed everyday!

The Kindergarten classroom. I LOVE that is is bright and cheerful, just as a Kinder room should be! The other classrooms in the school are quite plain and lacking in colour.

Little Sam. I warned you he was CUTE!!!

Heading to our home stay in our trusty truck, down the bumpy, gravel track.

Oom Mun, filling up with petrol Timor-style

The gravel track to our home stay. I lost count of how many times we came in and out of here!
